Crispy Chicken Strips

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:
  • 500 g (1 lb) boneless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into strips
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or ½ cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar/lemon juice)
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder
  • ½ tsp salt
For the Coating:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for extra spice)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
For Frying:
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Chicken:

    • In a bowl, combine buttermilk, garlic paste, paprika, black pepper powder, and salt. Mix well.
    • Add the chicken strips and coat them evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours for extra tenderness.
  2. Prepare the Coating:

    • In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour, cornflour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  3. Coat the Chicken:

    • Remove the chicken strips from the marinade, letting the excess liquid drip off.
    • Dredge each strip in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure the coating sticks well.
    • For extra crispiness, dip the coated chicken back into the buttermilk and then into the flour mixture again.
  4. Fry the Chicken:

    • Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
    • Carefully lower the coated chicken strips into the hot oil in small batches to avoid overcrowding.
    • Fry for 4-6 minutes, turning occasionally, until the strips are golden brown and fully cooked (internal temperature of 165°F/74°C).
    • Remove and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces like ranch, honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or spicy mayo. Pair with fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal.

Tips for Crispy Chicken Strips:

  • Use a meat thermometer to maintain the oil temperature for even frying.
  • Let the coated chicken rest for 5 minutes before frying to help the coating adhere better.
  • For a baked version, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the strips on a greased rack for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
